Brief History of YBBA
The Yimkhiung land is situated in the north eastern part of Nagaland. The inhabited area run along the eastern foothills of Saramati Mountain and Western Shahyih kuthran. The Langa River runs through the heart of the region. The yimkhiung tribe is topographically surrounded by Myanmar in the east, the Sümi and the upper Sangtam in the west, Chang and Khiamniungan in the north, eastern part of Sangtam and puchury in the south. It is inhabited by more than 88 villages with above one lakh fifteen thousand population approximately as per recent census.
According to the oral tradition, the Yimkhiung tribe had migrated to the present land from China, Thailand, Burma and finally landed to Murü below Mimi village (which was considered as the first village). The term Yimkhiung: Prior to the British occupation of Nagaland territory, the name of the tribe was known as Yimkhiungrü. The usage of 'Yim' stands for "searched" and 'Khiung' means "reached". Hence with the combination of two words Yimkhiung means people who has searched and reached their permanent inhabitants.
According to the available sources, Christianity came to Yimkhiung area from two directions. The first group penetrated from Sümi Mission Centre, Aizüto through Huker village in 1947 and established the first church on 15th March 1947 by evangelist Lhovikhu. The second Gospel team came to Thsotoku village from Ao Mission centre, Impur in 1950 and established a church after one year. However, Association was not formed till 1959 due to the smaller number of churches. It was exactly in 1959 on January 3rd, G. Kihoto an evangelist from Sumi community was sent to Shamator and mobilized the local churches and officially established the Yimkhiung Baptist Borü Amukhungto. Prior to the declaration of Yimkhiung Baptist Borü Amukhungto and Mission Centre, there was a series of meetings held, It was on 13th November 1959, the Yimkhiung Baptist Borü Amukhungto was officially established with the strength of more than 20 local churches subsequently the Mission Centre at Shamator Town was declared as its permanent Centre in 1960.
Key Milestones
First church was established at Huker Village with the initiative of sumi evangelist by the name 'Lhovikhu' who was sent by Sumi Mission Centre, Aizūto.
Second Gospel team came to Thsotoku village from Ao Mission centre, Impur, and established a church after one year.
G. Kihoto an evangelist from Sumi community was sent to Shamator and mobilized local churches to officially establish the Yimkhiung Baptist Borü Amukhungto.
Yimkhiung Baptist Borü Amukhungto officially established with the strength of more than 20 local churches.
Mission Centre at Shamator Town declared as its permanent Centre.
